Oldham 1 Swansea 0 - Match Report - Evening Post, Pictures Dai Smith
The Italian striker, on loan from League One rivals Brighton, broke the deadlock when he headed home Simon Charlton's cross from close range.
Swansea - who missed out on promotion to Barnsley last term following an agonising penalty shoot-out defeat at the Millennium Stadium - missed a glorious chance to equalise when Will Haining brought down Thomas Butler inside the box.
But just like in Cardiff last May, Kenny Jackett's side spurned their chance as last season's leading scorer Lee Trundle saw his penalty brilliantly saved by Chris Howarth. Trundle had been denied in the first half when his left-footed shot hit the crossbar.
