Re: Mr Pessimism column - Mike Kent
Mike we aren't playing 4-4-2 becasue we released practically all our wing players and did not replace them like for like. Reid can do a job on the wing but apart from him all we have is Lee Jenkins and no offence to the lad he is no real winger.

Nick decided early to play 5-3-2 and has brought in players accordingly, now if he learns from the mistakes of playing full backs in the centre then I think it could work out for the best. Actually being different from most teams may give us the edge over those only used to playing against 4-4-2.

Re: Friday night football
I agree with Friday night football, I can get to most home games in the week but saturdays really are a squeeze as I have to be back in Cardiff by 6:30 to attend my Rifle Club. It has long been acknowledged how big the amateur leagues are here but I must point out also that Saturday engages many others in other sports too (Shooting, Rugby, Cricket etc) that are also swans supporters albeit ones who have two left feet :).

In short I'm all for it.

Re: video clips
Gary used to capture the goals and put them on this site, I know he's not running it now but is there any chance he (or someone else) could do so again ?

Sorry, I can't see me starting video clips again. Far too much hastle with copyright issues etc - Dai

Re: Saturday's match
just a quicky.glad that theobald's contribution to saturday's game was also noticed certainly his first half performance was outstanding missed very little with his feet or head and appeared to be very much in control of his game

Re: re North Bank Natter
Anything that could increase gates should be given serious thought.
Friday night games could as Nick says allow local league players the chance to get down the Vetch. How many would take the chance is open to debate, as Tuesday crowds have shown. The gain from playing on Fridays could also be offset by exiles being unable to get down in time, unlike a Saturday.

In reality the only thing that will bring the crowds back is success, coupled with some good football. The run in during our promotion season saw crowds averaging 6,000 even though the football wasn't actually scintillating.

Adult local players have a choice to come, most can't be bothered to rush to the Vetch after their game. Children however kick off at 11.00 ??, leaving enough time to get to matches, so more must be done to encourage them (catch them young).

It's simple economics,
1 Adult = £10
1 child being taken by an adult = £15

Re: Fridays - reply to Tudor
Tranmere played on a Friday night for years and might still do.

I'm sure that this was just because there were another two major teams in the area but I think that if we REALLY wanted to change, we probably could.

Rgds,
Nick

Re: First With Everything Important
In response to Tony S and his suggestion for the new banner head.
Tony, it is not unusual to see the papers lift what has been previously placed on internet sites. Talk to the majority of the Swansea reporting press and you will find that they regularly log onto the sites to gleam information and/or rumours.

You only have to look back over the past 12 months to see what has been taken from internet sites and reproduced as 'exclusives' or the like.

It has happened before and it will happen again.

Re: Swansworld
Has anyone taken out a subscription? The web site doesn't give you the chance to see anything, all of the video options are only available to subscribers. I'm not really interested in live radio, but I would be in highlights of Swans games.

As of yet I haven't, but if video highlights is your thing I am told Swans World has an impressive searchable archive of Swans goals. Dai

Re: The "weekday" statistics
I must say that I was impressed by the "Wales on Sunday" article entitled "When Saturday Comes" reproduced on this site.

Actually, I was even more impressed back on 27th February when I first reported the same interesting facts. Oh well, sic transit gloria. WOS has a bit more circulation than this site.

[Sic transit gloria? English translation from my schooldays: "Will you look at the *** on Gloria as she passes by."] Or go look at my "Across the Pond" #6 and read the original study.

Re: Saturday's match
There doesn't seem to be much comment on the match in the Guestbook, so here's my random thoughts on Saturday's match, and very welcome three points.

First, reasonable crowd, but where were the 1,500 missing from the first game? Anyway, well done those that WERE there for generating such a great atmosphere.

I'm chuffed with the result, but we have to be honest, Bournemouth were pretty awful. On a scale of 1 to 10, with Rushden being ten, they were a four at best. And I wasn't very impressed with our performance in the first twenty minutes of the second half, when we fell back too deep AGAIN, and let a third rate team dominate us. Only some dreadful finishing let us off the hook.

On the positive side, I thought Theobald was a revelation. What a performance. Strong, calm and decisive. When was the last time you saw a Swans central defender play the ball calmly to feet when under pressure? If this is his normal standard, he'd be my first pick for every game. Praise, too, for Roger. He's so good, we've almost come to take him for granted. It's only when you see a duff performance from his opposite number like we saw on Staurday, that you realise just how good he is. Rock solid, in fact. And his injury seems to have done him some good, because he can kick his clearances straight, now; he's lost his 'left hook'!.

Finally, Woods. A good battling performance, somewhat spoiled for me by his 'Dying Swan' routine when fouled near the end, designed to get the defender responsible the red card. Rolling over five or six times, jerking and twitching in agony is OK for the Indians when shot in John Wayne films, but don't do it down the Vetch, son. We don't like it.

See you at Bristol!

Re: friday nights
intersting thoughts Nick, but i wonder whether we would be allowed to play on fridays.

I am sure that a few years ago Torquay did play matches on a Friday due to their location however the FA and FL stopped this as it was deemed as giving unfair advantage to them.

Our gates would improve as the catchment would improve its worth a try, if you dont ask you dont get

I have just put an article up on Papertalk from the Wales on Sunday yesterday showing the stats - Quite alarming really. Dai

Re: Police Advice?
There has been no discussion about the moving of the Bristol Rovers game from Bank Holiday Monday to Tuesday evening. Every other Nationwide League game seems to be able to be played. What is the problem? I went along to Bristol last season, parked in a street and walked to and from the game, and there was no hint of any antagonism from Rovers fans. Surely the history of trouble is from Bristol City. This move will reduce attendance, which no lower league club can allow. Does this mean that no derby games can be played at the normal time? I recall that the first game at Cheltenham was moved to a stupid hour - there could not have been a history of trouble between the clubs as we had never played before.

In the wider context, everything needs to be done to make games appealing to the public, including playing when it is most likely to attract the best attendance. If there are people intent on causing trouble they should be arrested and charged - giving into them by moving games is just making them feel more important. The game in its current financial state, can afford neither the trouble-making so-called fans nor the league organisation, club officials and police who just avoid the issue. Those clubs whose supporters constantly cause trouble: Bristol City, Cardiff, Stoke, Millwall, etc, should be severely fined, have point deducted and eventually thrown out of the league. Even these clubs have a vast majority of fans who just want to support their clubs and watch the games - they would turn against the trouble makers if their clubs were being adversely affected.
