Having witnessed first-hand the Bristol Rovers match, I couldn't disagree with most of the criticism levelled at the team on the Guestbook. I also wondered if our poor performance was due to simple lack of leadership on the pitch, which patently wasn't there at the start on Tuesday night.
I think we have two natural leaders in the squad. One of them is O'Leary. He's not very pacy, but he IS as strong as an ox, and I wouldn't like to get in an arguement with him. You never see him get knocked off the ball, and he also gives the impression that he's mentally tough.
The other natural leader (unfortunately?) is our manager. You could see it writ large on Tuesday night. When he came on, he was everywhere, winning everything in the air, shouting for the ball to be played up to him, urging on the other players. You could see the team visibly growing in confidence and starting to believe in themselves. Maybe he's too valuable an asset to have standing on the sidelines when O'Leary's not playing.
Keaveney's performance was encouraging - I liked the fact that when he got the ball, wherever he was, his natural instinct was to turn his defender, head for goal and get in a shot or cross. He's raw, but give him time.
And as for that ground! Surely that doesn't meet safety requirements? We were crammed into one uncomfortable corner like sardines in a tin, facing a marquee left over from the vicar's tea party, and a 20ft inflatable headless human torso, complete with stumpy kneck, sporting a Rovers shirt. Where's your catapult when you need it?
I like the description of the Memorial Stadium - Dai
